Online sellers mull over dilemma of free postage
Traders operating in many sections of e-commerce are just as keen to grasp any advantage they can over their competitors as their bricks-and-mortar store compatriots.
Whatever form those perceived advantages take, there is always someone keen to try new ways of stealing a march on the competition – be it through innovative products, exceptional customer service, or cost-savings on other parts of their service, such as delivery. The last of these is clearly a very contentious area, with some e-tailers convinced that offering free postage provides a perceived, as well as an actual advantage over rivals not doing likewise, and some concerned that the trend towards such a service in the name of pursuing customers at all costs will damage their businesses' long-term viability.
Whichever side of the argument a business trading online comes down on, it is clearly in no one's interest for it to simply eliminate postal charges for its customers, without at the same time taking some balancing action which will reduce its costs by similar amounts to those which the free postage offer will cost them. Unless it is operating in a sector with products which customarily have a high mark-up in their prices, there can be little future for a business which eliminates these costs for its customers, without thinking carefully about where it can recoup the cost involved.
In any case, people are, in general, not so naive as to think that they really are getting free postage – they recognise that they will be paying for the delivery service they receive in one way or another. The issue is simply whether or not they are happy with that fact, or whether they would rather have delivery charges spelled out to them clearly in advance, so that they at least will not have any nasty surprises. In order to offer free postage, a business will need a good relationship with its delivery service providers, or will need to keep a constant watch out for way in which it can reduce its postage costs to the minimum.
There is no escaping the work involved in putting the foundations in place to make such an offer. But with the internet now allowing anyone to do their own cost-cutting when it comes to postage prices, a business which does not take advantage of this opportunity could be missing a trick which its competitors are very likely to already be switched on to.
