Robert Shumake: The Double Bottom Line
Earlier this year, Bill Gates and Warren Buffett announced their Giving Pledge, in which they asked the world’s billionaires to give away the majority of their wealth within their lifetime. That’s essentially the same sentiment as my double bottom line theory – if your success in business brings you monetary gain, you have a moral obligation to use that money to make the world a better place. And while I’m no billionaire, I have had a fair amount of success. Inheritance Capital Group is fortunate enough to manage a portfolio of 3 million square feet of office and warehouse space worth more than $200 million. Our clients include GM, Lockheed Martin, Lufthansa, UPS, Reichold and Eagle Ottawa. As I always say, “We’re not your traditional real estate company; we buy corporate America.”
So, I’m still in the process of gaining my fortune, but I definitely believe in giving a lot of it away. I think we all can find it in ourselves to give back, whether it be monetarily or just volunteering in your community. And even the http://givingpledge.org/ website states:
“While the Giving Pledge is specifically focused on billionaires, the idea takes its inspiration from efforts in the past and at present that encourage and recognize givers of all financial means and backgrounds. We are inspired by the example set by millions of Americans who give generously (and often at great personal sacrifice) to make the world a better place.”
And just this week, Mark Zuckerberg (the founder of Facebook and, at just 26, the 35th richest person on the Forbes 400 list) announced that he will give the Newark, New Jersey school district $100 million dollars. Now, Newark is a troubled city, much like my hometown of Detroit, so this type of giving is exactly what I’m talking about when I talk about that double bottom line. This young kid, Zuckerberg, created what has turned out to be a ubiquitous social networking website that millions of people use on a daily basis. And because of that, he is now worth $6.9 million. And whether it’s true that he’s using his generous gift to offset negative press from a new movie about him, “The Social Network,” the fact remains that he is giving $100 million to a school district in dire need of help.
Through various philanthropic efforts – a track meet that awards college scholarships, a charter school in the struggling city of Detroit, trips to Africa to help get more rural children to stay in school, and much more – I am doing my own part to raise up my beloved city and hopefully give today’s youth a chance to succeed like I did.
