Bringing Steffani’s opera Niobe to a Contemporary Audience
This month The Royal Opera House stages its first performance of the rare baroque opera Niobe by the Italian composer Agostino Steffani, Steffani (1654–1728) was widely acclaimed in his own day and admired by such composers as Handel for his musicality and originality. Not a household name like
Mozart
or
Tchaikovsky
, he is somewhat unknown today, except to scholars of baroque music. His operas were written largely for the Munich court, and show a remarkable combination of influences: Italian elegance and expression with a conciseness of construction influenced by French models.
Niobe
was first performed in Munich in 1688, and had not been performed for centuries until recently. Elaine Padmore, ROH Director of Opera, is responsible for bringing the work to Covent Garden. She says she was bowled over by a performance of Niobe at the 2008 Schwetzingen Festival in Germany, describing it as “a terrific piece, a dramatic story with some dance and beautiful music”. The opera, she says, has been unjustly neglected purely because it fell out of use - until rediscovered by Thomas Hengelbrock, the conductor of the work for the Royal Opera, and a renowned baroque specialist, There are many, many hundreds of operas which have been written over the centuries and many have ‘slipped through the cracks’, says Elaine Padmore.
The Royal Opera House production of the opera is based on the Schwetzingen one and will be the first time the work has been staged in the UK. The new staging is a co-production with the Grand Theatre de Luxembourg and mostly uses same staging and costumes as that at the Schwetzingen festival, but on a larger stage to fill the Covent Garden auditorium. There are some ingenious and impressive atmospheric effects, such as fire, smoke, and magical illusions to conjure the fantastical world of the baroque stage. Conductor Thomas Hengelbrock leads specialist Early Music orchestra The Balthasar Neumann Ensemble for each performance.
French soprano Vèronique Gens stars in the title role of the haughty Queen of Thebes whose terrible pride is her downfall. The Polish male soprano Jacek Laszczkowski is Anfione, her husband. He is the mythical inventor of the lyre and harmony, and in the opera he personifies the mysterious and magical power of music. In Act II he uses his beautiful singing voice to charm the city walls of Thebes to rise up and repel an enemy invasion. Laszczkowski is joined by three male counter tenors in the roles of Clearte, Anfione’s advisor; Tiberino, a young prince; and Creonte, an invading prince who conquers Thebes with the aid of a wicked magician Polifernes.
The opera ends in high tragedy as Niobe’s children are all slain by the Gods for Niobe’s hubris, and her husband Anfione commits suicide. Niobe is so grief stricken that she turns to stone,. Her final aria as she slowly turns to a statue is one of the most moving and astonishing points in this forgotten masterpiece.
