How do you look after woodworking tools? Sharpening a chisel
If you are proud of your
hand tools
and have spent years building your collection then Im sure I dont have to tell you how important it is to look after them properly. With so many types of hand tool the care needed is very different. Today we will be looking at woodworking chisels and the care these hand tools require.
Remember to store your chisel properly. The less you need to sharpen it the better, so dont get it blunt unnecessarily. The best advice with woodworking tools is to hang them on a rack. Its best not to keep them in a draw, but if you must then ensure they arent tossed in together. Use dividers to protect them. When chisels knock against each other then you quickly lose the sharp edge you need to work with it.
Before you start sharpening your chisel get together the things you need, a leather strop, sharpening stones and oil. Lubricate the stone with some oil before starting work. Take the chisel firmly in hand and gently run it against the sharpening stone at an angle of 20 degrees. Remember to work both sides of the blade evenly. You should be looking to develop a burr, you will know if you have formed that by dragging your finger away from the edge, when You Can feel a roughness to the edge then you move on to the next stone; sharpen away the burr using a slip stone.
Once the burr has been sharpened away with the slip stone you will need to work the edge with the leather strop. Do both sides equally to create the best edge. By the end of this process the whole burr should have been removed and the blade should be sharp.
Test the blade by very gently resting the sharp edge on your finger nail. The blade will stick to your nail if it is sharp enough, otherwise it will just slide across.
Remember that repeated sharpening of your chisel will eventually damage it, the real secret to caring for your chisel, like any woodworking tools, is to try and protect the blade as much as possible. Make sure that you are only using it for the correct purpose and that it is properly stored. I plan to get many more years out of my chisel and I have already had it for a long time.
